As freezing temperatures sweep across the US, at least 30 people have lost their lives in a sprawling winter emergency that has stretched from the South to the Northeast. The storm system, driven by Arctic air, has delivered heavy snowfall, dangerous ice, and wind chills dipping far below zero, placing immense strain on infrastructure and emergency services.
The cold wave carved a path through more than a dozen states, leaving some communities buried under over 50 centimetres of snow. Wind chills dropped to levels that could cause frostbite in minutes. Major highways became impassable, and entire regions ground to a halt as plough crews struggled to keep pace.
Deaths linked to the extreme weather have been reported across the country. In New York City, multiple people were found dead outdoors during the coldest nights. In Massachusetts and Ohio, individuals were struck by snowplows while attempting to clear roads. In Arkansas and Texas, teenagers died in sledding accidents on icy terrain. A woman in Kansas was found frozen after leaving a bar and becoming disoriented in sub-zero conditions.
The human toll highlights how freezing temperatures sweep across the US unevenly, hitting vulnerable populations hardest. City officials in New York noted that several victims had recently been in contact with the shelter system. Outreach teams have expanded efforts, transporting people into emergency housing and warming centres operating around the clock.
Power grids in southern states—less adapted to prolonged cold—buckled under the weight of ice-laden trees and damaged lines. More than half a million households were left without electricity at peak disruption. Mississippi, Tennessee, and parts of Texas were among the worst hit. Community centres and schools were converted into warming shelters, distributing blankets, hot meals, and generators.
Transportation networks have been severely disrupted. Thousands of flights were cancelled nationwide, with major hubs in New York, Washington, and Chicago facing cascading delays. Rail services slowed, and rural roads remained inaccessible for days in some areas.
Governors in multiple states issued emergency declarations, activating National Guard units to assist with rescue operations, shelter management, and snow clearance. Schools closed across wide regions, while hospitals prepared for surges in hypothermia and injury cases.
Meteorologists warn that freezing temperatures sweeping across the US are not easing quickly. Another surge of Arctic air is forecast to extend the cold into early February. Even as snowfall tapers, residual ice and refreezing conditions will keep roads hazardous and delay power restoration.
Emergency agencies urge residents to limit travel, conserve heat, and check on neighbours. In many regions, the focus has shifted from storm response to survival—preventing further loss of life as this deep freeze tightens its grip.
