
January 20, 2023: On Wednesday, Amazon said that it plans to shut its goodwill donation schedule, in the recent example of the group’s broader cost-cutting efforts.
Through the program known as AmazonSmile, the e-retailer donates a percentage of eligible which buys on the site to the shoppers’ that charity organizations choose. Amazon has donated roughly $500 million to charities since the program launched in 2013.
Amazon plans to wind down AmazonSmile by February 20, the company said in a report to customers posted to its website.
“After ten years, the program has not increased to create the impact that we had initially hoped,” the firm said. “With so many eligible organizations, over 1 million worldwide and our ability to have an impact was often spread too thin.”

Amazon will keep investing in areas where it can “create meaningful change,” like assisting with natural disaster relief, revealing housing initiatives and community assistance programs.
The move to shut the AmazonSmile comes as CEO Andy Jassy has started a sweeping review of the firm’s expenses amid a worsening economic outlook and slowing increase in its retail division.
Amazon has started the most extensive layoffs and instituted a hiring freeze all over its corporate workforce. Jassy has been working to rein in costs, so the firm paused warehouse expansion. It shuttered some experimental projects, such as its telehealth service and a quirky video-calling device for kids.
