US unemployed shares abruptly decline per week

January 20, 2023: The number of Americans filing recent claims for unemployment benefits suddenly decreased in the previous week, helping the labour market remains tight even after higher interest prices.

Initial shares for state unemployment gains decreased by 15,000 to a seasonally maintained 190,000 for the week ended January 14, the Labor Department said.

Part of the surprise also comes down in claims likely reflected, which continues challenges that adjust the data for seasonal fluctuations when the year began.

Through the seasonal volatility, claims have remained consistent with tight labour demand, such as layoffs have started in the technology industry and interest price-sensitive sectors such as finance and housing.

On Wednesday, Microsoft said it would eliminate 10,000 jobs, joining cloud-computing rival Amazon.com, which started notifying employees of its 18,000-person job cuts. Economists cautioned against reading the technology layoffs that flag a deterioration in labour market conditions, claiming that these companies were right-sizing after over-hiring during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The tech sector is just getting back to where they were in 2020 or 2021, which I don’t think is a bad case,” said John Blevins, a guest lecturer at Cornell’s SC Johnson College of Business. “It’s still a huge workforce. These people being allowed go at these major tech firms will instantly get new replacement jobs.”

Outside the technology industry, economists stated companies are generally unwilling to send workers home after difficulties finding labour during the pandemic. They anticipate companies to cut back on hiring before resorting to layoffs.

Indeed, the Federal Reserve’s Beige Book reported that “many firms hesitated to lay off workers even as demand for their goods and services lessened and planned to decrease headcount through attrition if needed.”

The claims data covered the period in which the administration surveyed businesses for the nonfarm payroll component of January’s employment report.

Claims came down between the December and January survey weeks. The economy further added 223,000 jobs this month.
