Vietnam Agri-Food Exports Surge by 227%
The Canadian province of Saskatchewan has witnessed a remarkable surge in agri-food exports to Vietnam. According to recently released data, the total value of these exports reached $46 million in 2023, a staggering 227% increase compared to the previous year’s figure of $3.7 million. This significant growth is attributed to a combination of factors, including rising demand in Vietnam and strategic investments by the Saskatchewan government.
Non-durum wheat emerged as the leading agri-food product exported to Vietnam, experiencing a meteoric rise from $3.7 million in 2022 to a staggering $40.6 million in 2023. This represents a nearly 1,100% increase, highlighting the growing Vietnamese appetite for this specific type of wheat. Saskatchewan is a world leader in non-durum wheat production, and this export surge signifies a successful diversification of its Vietnamese market beyond traditional commodities.
Other noteworthy agri-food exports to Vietnam include peas and pure-bred swine. These products also witnessed significant growth, further solidifying the expanding trade relationship between Saskatchewan and Vietnam. The Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture attributes this success to the province’s commitment to providing high-quality, sustainable, and reliable food products to global communities.
The Saskatchewan government has demonstrated a crucial role in fostering this export growth. Establishing an international trade and investment office in Vietnam has facilitated the development of strong relationships with key stakeholders in the Vietnamese market. This ongoing engagement has helped to raise Saskatchewan’s profile, showcase its diverse agri-food offerings, and ultimately attract Vietnamese buyers.
The dramatic increase in agri-food exports to Vietnam presents a positive development for Saskatchewan’s economy. It signifies the potential for further market diversification and economic growth within the province’s agricultural sector. The Saskatchewan government is expected to continue its efforts to strengthen trade relations with Vietnam and explore additional opportunities for collaboration in the agri-food industry.
