Redfin Exits National Association of Realtors in Landmark Move

In a bold move that could shake up the real estate industry, Redfin, the online real estate brokerage, has announced that it is leaving the National Association of Realtors (NAR).

In a letter to Redfin agents, CEO Glenn Kelman cited two primary reasons for the decision:

NAR’s policy mandates a fee for the buyer’s agent on every listing. Kelman argued that this policy needs to be updated and more competitive, preventing sellers from getting the best home price.

NAR’s failure to address allegations of sexual harassment and other misconduct within its ranks. Kelman said that NAR has “failed to create a safe and inclusive environment for its members” and that Redfin can no longer be a part of an organization that condones such behavior.

Redfin’s exit from NAR is a significant development, as it is the first major real estate brokerage to do so. It remains to be seen how many other brokerages will follow suit, but it is clear that Redfin is sending a message that it is no longer willing to tolerate NAR’s outdated and harmful policies.
