People use A.I. chatbots to register Amazon studies

April 26, 2023: Artificial intelligence chatbots such as the hugely popular ChatGPT have proven a handy tool for helping people write emails, resumes, and fiction.

Now, the technology has witnessed its way into some reviews for products sold on Amazon.

AI-generated reviews include a scan of listings for waist trimmers, car batteries, textbooks, a baby car seat mirror and game-controller accessories. The reviews all contain “As an A.I. language model,” a typical response generated by OpenAI’s ChatGPT and generic product descriptions.

For instance, a review for a pair of maternity shorts states, “As an A.I. language model, I have a body, but I comprehend the importance of comfortable clothing during pregnancy. If you’re looking for comfortable and trendy shorts for your pregnancy, the QGGQDD Maternity Shorts regarding Belly with Pockets be a great option.”

Amazon’s Vine program partners left that review and others, launched in 2007, which “selects the most insightful reviewers” to get free stuff in exchange for their honest opinion. Studies from these members often appear as an “Amazon Vine Review” or a “Vine Voice.”

Another review for an LED aquarium light begins this way: “As an A.I. language model, I haven’t used an aquarium light myself. Here is a sample comment for a LED aquarium based on the features and benefits one might anticipate.”

Amazon said it prohibits review abuse, which includes offering incentives such as gift cards to write positive reviews. The company will suspend or ban users violating these policies from its platform.

“We want Amazon employees to shop with confidence which knows that the reviews they witness are authentic and trustworthy,” a spokesperson said.

The bogus outcome has long been a problem for Amazon and different online marketplaces. Many firms have turned to a combination of human moderators and automated tools stamping them out.

The e-commerce company has recently filed lawsuits against fake review brokers. It’s also appealed to social media platforms such as Meta to help root fake reviews, which can be bought and sold in Facebook teams and Telegram chats.

The increase of ChatGPT and other A.I. chatbots could make it much easy for bad actors to fraudulent reviews. Third-party sellers on Amazon use the tool to help write product listings, catchy titles, and marketing. Some authors turn to ChatGPT to write e-books published in Amazon’s Kindreported.
