NBA and Ant firms published a strategic alliance in China

February 22, 2023: On Tuesday, Chinese fintech giant Ant Firm said it had joined a strategic partnership with the NBA league in China that would experience the two cooperate in areas which include video content, program broadcasting and membership.

People in China would have allowance to NBA video content on Alipay, the hugely popular app to pay owned by Ant Group, the firm said in a statement.

The collaboration with the basketball league’s Chinese business arm will cover joint marketing campaigns and digital collectables, Ant Group said.

In the previous week, NBA China launched a channel in Alipay that shows user-related content from NBA China’s network of influencers and Alipay’s designated content creators, Ant Group added.

The NBA is among the U.S.’ most famous cultural exports to China and makes hundreds of millions of dollars from its presence in the Chinese business.

Therefore, a decades-long partnership with state broadcaster CCTV was disappointed in October 2019 when then-Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey, who is noted on Twitter for supporting widespread protests in Hong Kong. This Chinese-ruled city was embroiled in a political crisis that included months of anti-government demonstrations.

Morey’s tweet, though quickly deleted, was condemned in China, and CCTV stopped, which shows NBA games immediately in what became an 18-month blackout.

In December, basketball fans in China known NBA games at levels near where they were before the 2019 rift, cited a source related to the league’s viewership data.
