Minnesota to Provide Rebates for Up to 75% of E-Bike Costs

The state of Minnesota has implemented a new program offering residents rebates to purchase qualifying electric bicycles (e-bikes). This initiative, aimed at promoting sustainable transportation options, could significantly reduce the upfront cost of e-bikes for Minnesotans.

The program offers rebates ranging from 50% to 75% of the purchase price of a new e-bike, with a maximum rebate amount of $1,500. These rebates also extend to certain accessories, including helmets, lights, locks, and cargo carriers. This comprehensive approach incentivizes a complete e-bike purchase experience that prioritizes safety and functionality.

Eligibility for the program is restricted to Minnesota residents who have been legal residents for at least one year. Applicants must be at least 15 years old and cannot have been claimed as a dependent on another tax return in the previous year. These stipulations ensure that the program benefits in-state residents who will actively utilize the e-bikes.

The application process is divided into two phases. Initially, retailers offering qualifying e-bikes must register with the Minnesota Department of Revenue. Once approved, individual consumers can apply for rebates starting June 5th, 2024. Applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis, with $2 million allocated for rebates in 2024 and 2025.

Upon approval, individuals will receive a rebate certificate that can be used to purchase a qualifying e-bike from a participating retailer within two months. This timeframe ensures a streamlined redemption process for consumers.
