Marvel's 'Ant-Man and the Wasp, Quantumania, is cutting $104 million during its household debut

February 21, 2023: Disney and Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man and the Wasp, Quantumania” scored estimating $104 million at the household box office in its opening weekend.

The 31st Marvel Cinematic Universe movie kicked off phase five of the franchise and established the following overarching villain for the series Kang. The character was initially seen in the Disney+ series “Loki.”

“Quantumania’s” domestic haul is almost double what the first standalone Ant-Man movies opened to in 2015 and is pointing to the 31st consecutive MCU release debuting at number one at the domestic box office.

“Marvel has been under the microscope in post-Endgame times than they’re used to, with many films and streaming series occasionally not stating as well with critics and audiences as the brand is used to, which made this release more important as it promises to kickstart Phase 5,” stated Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at BoxOffice.com.

“Although few critics didn’t take to the coming Ant-Man entry, audiences turned out for the film in numbers to the tune of more tickets sold on opening weekend than for prior Ant-Man release,” he said.

Internationally, “Quantumania” took in $121 million, which brings its estimated global haul for the three-day spreading to $225 million.

“The power of the Marvel brand driving moviegoers to the multiplex is unrejecting, and the excitement surrounding phase five of the MCU creates ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp, Quantumania’ viewing for any fan looking to beginning their enthusiasm for this new era in the ongoing Marvel saga,” stated Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore.

The film is anticipated to drive more than seven million patrons to theatres this weekend, according to data from EntTelligence. That’s over double what Sony’s “Uncharted” lured in during the previous year’s Presidents Day weekend.

“This Presidents weekend boasts the initial true blockbuster opener of 2023,” stated Comscore’s Dergarabedian. ”‘Ant-Man and the Wasp, Quantumania’ setting into motion what looks to be the week following a week of solid moviegoing and concocting momentum for a solid summer movie season.”

Therefore, 28% of ticket buyers opted for premium format theatres, paying an average of $4.29 per ticket.

Higher foot traffic and higher ticket which spends are good signs for the movie theatre initiative, which suffered during the pandemic and is still recovering.
