Holocaust Memorial Day: Auschwitz Liberation's 80th Anniversary
January 27, 2025: Holocaust Memorial Day marks the 80th Anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, where over 1.1 million people were killed between 1940 and 1945. Survivors, many now elderly, returned to the former concentration camp to honor victims and share their experiences. Among them was 94-year-old Jona Laks, who survived Josef Mengele’s medical experiments and the gas chambers due to her twin sister’s intervention. Reflecting on the past, she described the suffering as “impossible to understand” and warned that lessons from the Holocaust risk being forgotten.
Approximately 420,000 Hungarian Jews were deported to Auschwitz, a tragedy symbolized by a freight train car displayed at the site. Survivors emphasized the importance of preserving these memories, with Auschwitz survivor Michael Bornstein acknowledging the emotional difficulty of returning to the site.
The commemoration, attended by world leaders such as King Charles, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and French President Emmanuel Macron, focused on survivor testimonies rather than political speeches. Auschwitz Museum officials recognized the physical and emotional toll on the remaining survivors and ensured their comfort throughout the event.
The day’s significance extends beyond remembrance. It highlights contemporary challenges, including a surge in antisemitism in Europe, which rose by over 400% in some areas after the 2023 Israel-Hamas conflict. Many Jewish individuals report feeling unsafe, with 76% admitting they hide their identity at times. This is coupled with rising Islamophobia, reflecting broader societal divisions.
International Holocaust Memorial Day, established by the United Nations in 2005, serves as a global reminder of the atrocities and a call to combat hate. Survivors continue to stress the importance of education, remembrance, and vigilance to prevent such horrors from recurring. The Anniversary provides an opportunity for shared reflection, urging societies worldwide to reject prejudice and promote tolerance.
