September 26, 2023: Microsoft Cloud employs an “implement global small modular reactor and microreactor” strategy to power data centers.
The company aims to lead the technical assessment for integrating small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) and microreactors into its data centers to power its cloud and AI services.
Microsoft has published a job description aiming at a nuclear technology expert as “principal program manager for nuclear technology.”
This move reflects a growing interest in nuclear energy to generate electricity with minimal carbon emissions, aligning with climate change concerns. Nuclear reactors have the advantage of producing electricity without significant carbon dioxide emissions.
In the United States, the existing fleet of nuclear reactors was primarily constructed between 1970 and 1990 and currently accounts for about 18% of the country’s total electricity generation.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, nuclear energy also contributes significantly to America’s carbon-free electricity, making up 47% in 2022.
The focus on small nuclear reactors is a notable development. Due to their modular design, these reactors are smaller, more cost-effective, and quicker to build, reducing the time and expenses traditionally associated with nuclear reactor construction.
Microsoft’s interest in using SMRs and microreactors to power its data centers underscores the potential of this technology for sustainable energy solutions.
This move aligns with the broader trend of technology companies exploring alternative energy sources and sustainability initiatives to power their data centers and reduce their environmental footprint.
