
September 20, 2023: President Joe Biden is set to address the United Nations General Assembly, where he will emphasize the importance of democracy and advocate for increased support for Ukraine.
This speech allowed Biden to promote diplomacy and American leadership on the global stage.
Notably, leaders from 145 countries are expected to attend. Still, France, the United Kingdom, China, and Russia will not be present, leaving four of the five U.N. Security Council permanent members absent.
The absence of China and Russia allows Biden to strengthen ties with smaller, developing nations that attend the U.N. General Assembly.
During his visit, Biden will meet with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who has advocated for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. Biden
will also meet jointly with leaders from five central Asian nations, marking a first for a U.S. president. Additionally, he will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
This U.N. summit will mark the first time Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has attended in person since the war began.
Biden aims to reaffirm his commitment to supporting Ukraine and will dedicate a substantial portion of his speech to addressing the conflict in Ukraine.
