March 27, 2023: Jeff Bezos’ space firm Blue Origin started findings from searches into the failed breakout of a cargo mission in the previous year, which it says was because of an issue in the rocket’s engine nozzle.
The company’s New Shepard rocket, which flies the NS-23 mission carrying science and research payloads, failed in September 2022. No people were onboard, and Blue Origin stated that its capsule’s emergency escape system functioned adequately, but the rocket’s reusable booster was killed.
Bezos’ firm had said little about its investigation over the past six months, which is happening with Federal Aviation Administration oversight.
On Friday, in a blog post, Blue Origin stated that it identified “a thermo-structural failure of the engine nozzle” as the director because of the issue. It is now modifying the engine, including design changes to account for its higher-than-expected temperatures in the flight.
“Blue Origin anticipates a return to flight sooner, with a re-flight of the NS-23 payloads,” the firm said.
The New Shepard rocket is launching from Blue Origin’s private facility in West Texas, which carries people and payloads above 100 kilometres for a couple of minutes of weightlessness. The capsule flows autonomously, with no human pilot, and floats decrease with the assistance of a set of parachutes landing in the Texas desert. The New Shepard rocket, which improves is reusable, comes back to land on a concrete pad near the launch site.
Blue Origin said its investigation found that the NS-23 flight’s engine failed due to “operational temperatures that overcome the expected and analyzed values of the nozzle material.” The firm recovered fragments of the BE-3 PM engine’s nozzle, which searched for “clear evidence of thermal damage and hot streaks which results from increased operating temperatures.”
The firm noted that its design transfers are intended to develop the engine’s performance at high temperatures and strengthen its nozzle.
