Samia Suluhu Hassan (27 January 1960) is a Tanzanian politician who is currently serving as the sixth president of Tanzania. A member of the ruling social-democrat Chama Cha Mapinduzi party, she is Tanzania’s first female president.
Suluhu was born in Makunduchi, on the Unguja island, in the Sultanate of Zanzibar. She studied at the Institute of Development Management with an advanced diploma in public administration degree in 1986. She also attended the University of Manchester between 1992 and 1994, earned a postgraduate diploma in economics, and obtained her MSc in Community Economic Development in 2015.
After her secondary school education, Suluhu was employed as a clerk by the Ministry of Planning and Development. Upon graduation, she was also employed on a project funded by the World Food Programme with her public administration degree.
In 2000, Suluhu decided to run for public office. She was later elected as a special seat member to the Zanzibar House of Representatives and was appointed a minister. She became the only high-ranking woman minister in the cabinet and was re-elected in 2005 and re-appointed as a minister in another portfolio.
On 19 March 2021, Suluhu was sworn in as the successor of John Magufuli and became Tanzania’s first female president. She is also the second Zanzibari to hold the presidential post and became one of two serving female heads of state in Africa, alongside Ethiopia’s Sahle-Work Zewde.
Suluhu is married to Hafidh Ameir, an agricultural officer who, by 2014, had retired. They have four children.
