Rose Christiane Raponda is a Gabonese politician currently serving as the Prime Minister of Gabon since 16 July 2020. She is the first female prime minister of the country and has previously served as the Mayor of Libreville and also the country’s Defense Minister from February 2019 to July 2020.
Christiane Raponda was born in 1964 in Libreville. She is a member of the Mpongwe people. She studied at the Gabonese Institute of Economy and Finance, where she pursued her economics and public finance degree.
Raponda had worked as Director-General of the Economy and Deputy Director-General of the Housing Bank of Gabon. From February 2012 until January 2014, she served as Budget Minister.
Raponda was once elected as Mayor of Libreville, the capital city, representing the ruling Gabonese Democratic Party in January 2014, and served in this position till 2019. She was the first woman to hold this position, and she has also become President of United Cities and Local Governments Africa.
Raponda became Defence Minister by President Ali Bongo Ondimba on 12 February 2019. She replaced Etienne Massard Kabinda Makaga, a member of the Bongo family, who had held the position since 2016.
On 16 July 2020, Raponda became the first woman Prime Minister of Gabon after her predecessor Julien Nkoghe Bekale stepped down. Her appointment is the fourth cabinet shuffle and had occurred during the dual health and economic crises due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
