Linda Karen Reynolds CSC is an Australian political figure most known for her tenure as Minister for the National Disability Insurance Scheme. She is also known for her time as the Minister for Defence from 2019 to 2021. She was a key member of the Morrison government. Reynolds has been active as a senator representing Western Australia since 2014.
Linda was born as the only daughter of Laith and Jan Reynolds in Perth, Australia, and has two brothers. Her family has a strong political background as her grandfather Alfred Reynolds was an MP from Western Australia representing the Labor Party. Reynolds traveled around a lot in her younger years, growing up in the suburb of Gooseberry Hill and attending St Brigid’s College. She also lived in Indonesia with her family and spoke Indonesian. Reynolds has also been known as a mentor to political leaders from other countries like Thailand, Papua New Guinea, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.
Reynolds finished her university education with a degree of Bachelor of Commerce from Curtin University and also holds graduate degrees from various prestigious institutions in Defence Management, Training, Development, and Strategic Studies. Reynolds is also a decorated military officer and was a soldier in the Australian Army Reserve for almost 30 years. She joined the army at the young age of 19 and went on to become the first female officer in the armed forces to attain the rank of brigadier. She was honored with the Conspicuous Service Cross (CSC) in 2011 for her services as an officer.
Linda Reynolds became an active member of the Liberal Party in 1987 and worked in various organizational wings of the party. Her first run as a Senator was clouded in controversy as there was re-election following the finding that there were missing ballot papers. She was re-elected in 2014. She has held various positions in the Australian cabinet. Her policies and political discourses are also notable. In early 2019, she garnered media attention for her staunch opposition to the medevac bill that expanded the medical evacuation of asylum seekers from offshore processing facilities to Australia. In 2021, Reynolds was given a less important role as the Minister for Government Services.
Linda Reynolds continues to be the voice of the people in Western Australia, tirelessly working towards ideals of development and representation.
