From Struggles to Success: Overcoming Challenges as a Woman Leader
Navigating the path to leadership is fraught with challenges, yet for women leaders, the journey often entails overcoming unique obstacles …
Natasha Bond does not believe in being afraid. She has been hailed as a fearless leader because she holds her ground in a technical, male-dominated STEM field. Her mantra is simple, “Don’t be afraid people won’t respect you for being female; assume they will treat you like a capable, confident part of the team and behave accordingly. Don’t be afraid of calling them out if they don’t. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes; everyone does. But if you try to avoid them, you risk being too timid and conservative. Don’t be afraid to admit you don’t know or to apologize. It is not a sign of weakness but of strength and humility. Don’t be afraid of being yourself. We are all different, and we all bring different values and capabilities. The best way to build a strong team is to play to the team’s strengths, but those can be hard to see if they are not openly offered.”
When Natasha joined ERI, it was a very traditional top-down leadership structure. She quickly turned this on its head, pushing decision-making much lower in the company and deliberately making opportunities for more junior staff to take leadership roles and increase autonomy. The results have been fantastic; communication is open and flowing naturally, and everyone has a voice and feels a sense of empowerment to stretch and grow. She describes the approach as ‘wolf pack leadership’; leading from behind, allowing others to choose the path but supporting and encouraging them to forge ahead. This how Natasha transformed the company and has been taking it to new heights.
ERI Group is a world-class, fully integrated contract design, development and manufacturing firm that turns great ideas into revolutionary medical devices. ERI Group believes good ideas should never go to waste, especially in healthcare and medicine, where new ideas will actually save lives. ERI Group offers their clients a world-class, multidisciplinary team that spans the entire process of bringing a medical device to market—from product design, development, quality, regulatory, and contract manufacturing. With 35 years of experience and deep technical expertise to handle the most complex projects, ERI Group connects the dots so their clients don’t have to.
Natasha is very purposeful about setting a vision for ERI. This has been consistent internally and externally and drives everything the company does. ERI’s mission, values, services, and culture are all based on that same vision, so it all hangs together credibly. Communication is critical to making this objective, so Natasha’s approachability and efforts to get to know the team at ERI and the customers, and what makes each unique, have been very important. “Her vision touches on why we do what we do: empowering visionaries to change lives,” says her team at ERI Group, who’s work to develop and commercialize novel medical devices is complex; technically, clinically, through regulation, everything. It is critical to have the team committed to making that happen and working hard for the right reasons, to make it a reality for the clients. Natasha’s drive and energy help maintain that passion and focus.
“I am fortunate that I love what I do. There is a Japanese methodology called ‘Ikigai,’ – which is the secret to a long and happy life.
It is summed up in this diagram, although I don’t think the diagram is original to the Ikigai philosophy, it is more of a modern interpretation,” explains Natasha. “However, my personal consultancy before I joined ERI was ‘Ikigai Medical Development’, and that really sums up why I think I have been successful and how my energy and passion stay high; I do what I love, that others find valuable, helping other people succeed in doing what they love.” And by following her natural passion for learning, Natasha has had the opportunity to ensure her expertise is broad and remains current. This allows her a unique opportunity to look across typically more siloed topics and add value simply by joining dots or introducing people of different perspectives into conversations.
The most significant achievement for Natasha through ERI has been the happiness of its people. “My business is based on talented people working hard to help really passionate clients make mazing new inventions to help those in need. Without that team, we are nothing,” she elucidates. “Their happiness, feeling fulfilled at work, challenged but supported, engaged, and delivering their best every day is the number one priority for me. Our recent staff survey told me the satisfaction rating at ERI has increased nearly 4-fold since I took the reins, which is something I am very proud of.”
The pioneering leader spends much time and energy mentoring and supporting the greater medical device innovation ecosystem. She is a staunch supporter of women-led businesses and spends a lot of time coaching and encouraging female entrepreneurs whenever possible. Natasha has implemented diversity policies at ERI and has a consistent track record supporting her team & other female leaders in situations where positive reinforcement is needed, or destructive behaviors need calling out. She is never afraid to call things out and take action to do the right thing.
For the days to come, ERI is investing heavily in infrastructure and IT systems to allow them to be more nimble and efficient. For Natasha, she is working on focus. “I feel a ton of passion for my business and the subject matter of our work, and so from that stems a habit of jumping in to help. Probably too often,” she says. “So I am working on being more selective in what I spend my time on, and ensuring I focus where I can add most value, both due to my skillset and opening opportunities for my team to get their hands on the trickiest client problems.”
ERI is poised for some fascinating times and has just merged with Link Product Development and is forming a couple of thrilling strategic relationships. Natasha is excited to see the growth and opportunities and “drinking from the firehose” in terms of financial and managerial skillsets needed to accomplish these more strategic goals. “I am 100% focused on ERI for the foreseeable future; something of this complexity needs focus and I am excited to learn and grow as the team learns and grows,” adds Natasha.
" Her approach touches on why we do what we do: empowering visionaries to change lives. "
