Zuzana Čaputová (21 June 1973) is a Slovak lawyer, politician, and environmental activist who is currently serving as President of Slovakia since 15 June 2019. She is the first woman to hold the presidency in the country and the youngest president in Slovakian history, elected at the age of 45.

Strapáková was born in Bratislava, where she grew up in the nearby town of Pezinok. In 1996, she graduated from the Comenius University Faculty of Law in Bratislava. Čaputová worked in Pezinok’s local government after studies. She then worked in the non-profit sector at the Open Society Foundations. There, she worked closely on the issues of child abuse and exploitation. In 2017, she joined the Progressive Slovakian political party and was elected as Vice-Chairwoman for the party. Strapáková campaigned for the police force to be an independent institution without political influence, headed by an impartial professional with proven service. She is also an environmental campaigner where climate change mitigation is one of her highest priorities, for which she is ending subsidies for coal and other fossil fuels. She adds that environmental protection should include preventing illegal deforestation and that 5% of the environment’s most valuable territory must remain a strictly protected zone.

In 2016, Čaputová was awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize. In recognition of her efforts for European democracy, she was awarded the European Prize for Political Culture in August 2019. In 2020, she was ranked #83 in Forbes’ list of the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women.
