Starbucks will cover eligible travel expenses for employees

May 17, 2022: -On Monday, Starbucks said it would, from now on, cover eligible travel expenses for employees who seek abortions or gender-affirming procedures.

The coffee chain is joining Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, and Salesforce in offering to reimburse workers for travel costs related to abortions which follows the leak of a draft U.S. Supreme Court ruling that would bring down Roe v. Wade. This landmark 1973 decision ensured the right to undergo the procedure.

Other significant companies, such as Walmart and Disney, have chosen to stay silent on the draft opinion.

Starbucks has a name for championing liberal causes, such as supporting same-sex marriage and hiring refugees vocally. That then extends to transgender rights. Its health insurance is also covering gender reassignment surgery since 2012 and a more comprehensive array of gender-affirming procedures, such as hair transplants or breast reductions, recently since 2018.

According to NBC News, as of mid-March, 154 anti-trans bills have been introduced in state legislatures, which are seeking to limit access to health care, sports, bathrooms, and education.

Starbucks employees with insurance plans who seek permission for abortion or gender-affirming procedures will be up for reimbursement of travel costs if those services are not available within 100 miles of their houses. The benefit will extend to any dependents enrolled in Starbucks health care.

A Starbucks representative said that the company is still working on additional details, like when the benefit kicks in. The company has nearly 240,000 U.S. employees.
