Sophie Wilmès Stone (15 January 1975) is a Belgian politician currently serving as Minister of Foreign Affairs since 2020. A member of the Reformist Movement, she was Prime Minister of Belgium from 2019 to 2020 and is the first woman to hold the position.
Stone was born in Ixelles, Brussels, and grew up in Grez-Doiceau, Walloon Brabant. She holds a degree in Applied communication in Advertising at the Institute for Higher Social Communication Studies (IHECS) and a degree in financial management from Saint-Louis University.
In 2000, Stone was a councilor in Uccle. She was elected as the first alderwoman in charge of Finance, Budget, Francophone Education, Communication, and Local Businesses for the town of Sint-Genesius-Rode from 2007 to 2014.
In December 2018, Stone became Minister of Budget, Civil Service, National Lottery, and Scientific Policy in the Michel II Government. On 27 October 2019, she became the first female Prime Minister of Belgium, where she led a caretaker government while negotiations proceeded to form a new coalition government.
On 1 October 2020, Stone was appointed deputy prime minister and foreign minister of the new government formed under Alexander De Croo, becoming the first female foreign minister in Belgian history. Beyond Stone’s keen interest in financial and economic matters, she continues to pay close attention to societal issues in the broadest sense and provides assistance and support for those in ill health and older people.
Alongside her commitment to the country’s unity, Stone is a passionate advocate of a free society in which everyone’s rights are respected. She is also committed to playing an active role in building a civic, responsible, and sustainable community where everyone can feel safe and freely realize their full potential.
