Sanna Mirella Marin (November 16, 1985) is a Finnish politician who is the youngest woman to serve as prime minister of Finland since 2019. She first entered the Finnish parliament in 2015 as a member of the Social Democratic Party and became the leader of the party in 2020.
Marin was born in Helsinki but grew up in Pirkkala, where she graduated from Pirkkala High School in 2004. In 2017, she pursued her master’s in administration sciences at the University of Tampere. In 2020, she married Markus Räikkönen, with whom she had a daughter.
Marin worked as a cashier at a bakery during her youth days and later joined the Social Democratic Party youth wing in 2006. She ran for a seat on the Tampere city council two years later, where her bid failed. But she ran for the second time in 2012, got elected, and was made the council’s chair the following year. She remained in this post till 2015.
During the 2019 parliamentary elections, she retained her seat and was named minister of transport and communications. At that time, prime minister Antti Rinne’s government was threatened with the dissolution of the coalition government due to a pay dispute, as a result of which he had to step down. Marin replaced his position and was announced prime minister on December 10, 2019. At the time, Marin was 34, and she became the youngest female head of government in the world.
Marin was regarded as the party’s most left-leaning member and was applauded for her clear thinking and focus on the country’s welfare. Her priorities focused on Finland’s social welfare program, equality, people rights, and climate change issues. Among her many ways to tackle climate change, one of her ideas was tapping social media influencers to spread awareness on climate change and measures. As prime minister, she was well appreciated for navigating the country through the first wave of Covid-19 infections in the spring of 2020.
