Salome Zourabichvili (March 18 1952) is a French–Georgian politician and a former diplomat who is currently serving as the fifth President of Georgia since December 16, 2018. Zourabichvili is the first woman to be elected as the president of Georgia, occupying six years.
Zourabichvili was born and brought up in Paris, where she attended some of the most prestigious French schools. From 1969 to 1972, she went to the Institute of Political Studies in Paris, France. She pursued her master’s program at Columbia University, School of International and Public Affairs, from 1972 to 1973 in New York, U.S.A.
Between 1974 to 2004, Zourabichvili worked in the diplomatic service for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of France in several embassies and French representations to international organizations. She served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia from 2004 to 2005. After leaving the post, she founded “The Way of Georgia,” a political party on March 11, 2006.
From 2006 to 2015, Zourabichvili was an Associate Professor of International Relations at the Institute of Political Studies in Paris, France. She led the United Nations Security Council monitoring group on sanctions against Iran at the same time from 2010 to 2015. Later in 2016, she won her election as Independent Deputy in the Parliament of Georgia.
On November 12, 2010, Zourabichvili announced her withdrawal from the leadership of Georgia’s Way. In the October 8, 2016, parliamentary elections, Zourabichvili won a seat as an independent, representing the Mtatsminda district of Tbilisi. She became MP on November 18.
After being elected President, Zourabichvili inherited a new Constitution that entered into force the day of her inauguration, which significantly removed several powers from the Presidency, concentrating them within Parliament and the Prime Minister’s Office. As the first elected woman president of Georgia, she has advocated for women’s rights and equality through social media and political tribunes. She has organized several meetings and attended conferences aiming to empower women and young girls. On October 5, 2019, she hosted a panel of women leaders from Georgia, Belgium, and France.
