Sahle-Work Zewde (February 21, 1950) is an Ethiopian politician and career diplomat who is currently the 5th president of Ethiopia, the first woman to hold office. She was elected by the Federal Parliamentary Assembly on October 25, 2018.

Zewde was born in Addis Ababa, where she attended elementary and secondary school at Lycée Guebre-Mariam. She later pursued natural science at the University of Montpellier in France and is fluent in French, Amharic, and English.

After ambassador Yodit Emiru, Zewde became the second woman appointed as an ambassador in Ethiopia’s history. From 1989 to 1993, Zewde served as Ambassador to Senegal. She was Ambassador to Djibouti from 1993 to 2002 and also a Permanent Representative to the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

Until 2011, Zewde served as a Special Representative of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Head of the UN Integrated Peace-building Office in the Central African Republic (BINUCA). In 2011, Ban Ki-moon appointed Zewde as Director-General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON). Under her leadership, the Nairobi office became a more critical UN hub for East and Central Africa, according to the 2012 Africa Yearbook.

In June 2018, Zewde was appointed as Special Representative to the African Union and Head of the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU) at the Under-Secretary-General level of the United Nations. She became the first woman to hold the post. On the annual edition of the Forbes list of The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women, Zewde was listed as the 96th most powerful woman globally and the highest-ranking African woman on the list.
