Since 2019, Regina Romero is the mayor of Tucson, Arizona. She’s an American politician. A member of the Democratic party, she is a member of the Tucson City Council from Ward 1 since 2007.
While on the Council, Regina Romero helped bring Tucson out of the Great Recession to its most prosperous decade in recent history by helping create thousands of high-wage, long-term jobs. Her leadership has proven her to be a champion in resolving issues such as affordable housing, infrastructure, climate change, access to a high-quality education, and neighborhood safety.
Besides focusing on these issues, Regina Romero also places a significant emphasis on “delivering equality, inclusion, and opportunity for all” as the mayor. According to her website, this includes a criminal justice reform plan, a race and social justice initiative with an agenda for immigrants, and a $15 minimum wage plan for city employees. At present, minimum wage workers in Tucson earn $11 per hour.
Regina Romero was elected Mayor of Tucson in November of this year, becoming the city’s first female and first Latina mayor, as well as the only Latina mayor among the country’s 50 most populous metropolitan areas.
Regina Romero was born and raised in Somerton, Arizona, and is the youngest of six children. She broke down barriers from an early age, becoming the family’s first voter and the first member to complete her college degree. She graduated from the University of Arizona graduate and earned a post-graduate certificate from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. She is the proud mother of two children and has been married to Ruben Reyes for 15 years.
