Pelosi says lawmakers are voting on sweeping gun legislation

June 6, 2022: -On Thursday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that lawmakers would vote on sweeping gun control bills in the next week to respond to a series of threatening mass shootings in the U.S. that have left dozens dead.

While several bills are expecting to clear the Democratic House, which includes a bill that would increase the legal age at which a person could purchase an assault rifle to 21 from 18, Pelosi acknowledged in a “Dear Colleague” letter the small chances of many pieces of that legislation passing in the Senate.

“Saving our children can and must be a unify mission for our nation,” she wrote.

Leading the gun control legislation in the House is Rep. Jerrold Nadler, the chair of the Judiciary Committee. He and his disputes are scrambling to pass a bill, a mix of various gun bills called the Protecting Our Children Act, out of committee before the day ends.

That collection of bills would invent the purchasing age for semiautomatic weapons from 18 to 21, outlaw high-capacity magazines and stocks for civilian use, and set additional robust gun storage requirements to protect children from accidental shootings.

The legislation moving from the Judiciary Committee to the broader House floor, where Pelosi and different Democrats will likely pass it to be sent along to the Senate, where the viable bipartisan talks are underway.

Many of the House reforms are stopped by Senate Republicans, who have the power to block legislation from advanced with the threat of a filibuster in that chamber.

Senate Democrats, leading Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, would need to persuade 10 Republicans to sign on to any gun safety policy if it hopes to make its way to President Joe Biden.

Despite sweeping activities offered by the House legislation, talks amid Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., and a handful of moderate Republicans focus on bulked-up background checks and red flags laws.
