Paula-Mae Weekes (December 23, 1958) is a judge who is the 6th President of Trinidad and Tobago. Weekes is the only incumbent female President in the Americas since November 8, 2020, and is the first female President and the second female head of State in Trinidad and Tobago.
Weekes was a former Justice of Appeal of judiciaries of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and The Turks and Caicos Islands. She attended Bishop Anstey High School and The University of the West Indies, Barbados, and graduated in 1980 with a Bachelor of Laws (Hons). She later obtained her Legal Education Certificate from the Hugh Wooding Law School in 1982 and was admitted to practice law in Trinidad and Tobago later that year.
In November 1982, Weekes joined the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions as State Counsel I. After representing the State in the Magistrates’ High and Appeal Courts for 11 years, she resigned in 1993 as Senior State Counsel and practiced privately.
From 1997 until she was elected President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Weekes was a part of the Diocesan Council, where she provided legal services on ecclesiastical and other matters at the diocese.
On September 14, 2018, Weekes received the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, which is the highest national award. Being a member of a global body known as Platform for Girls’ Education, her team aimed at providing 12 years of quality education for girls across the world.
