Two Koreas trade warns images about marine border amid uncertainties
October 25, 2022: -North and South Korea traded warning shots off the west coast on Monday, accusing them of breaching their western maritime border amid intensified military tension.
The South’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) added broadcast warnings and fired warnings to see off a North Korean merchant vessel crossing the Northern Limit Line, the de facto sea boundary.
The North’s military said it fired ten artillery shells following a South Korean navy ship that violated the NLL and fired warning doses “on the pretext of tracking down an unknown ship,” according to state media.
“We ordered starting countermeasures to expel the enemy warship by firing ten shells of multiple rocket launchers almost the waters where the enemy action occurred,” a person for the General Staff of the People’s Army of North Korea added a statement by the KCNA news agency.
The JCS said it was conducting a “routine operation” over the border intrusion and named the North’s act a “provocation” and a violation of a bilateral military treaty banning “hostile acts” in the border areas.
“We again are urging North Korea to cease consistent provocations and accusations harming the peace and stability of the Korean peninsula and the international community,” the JCS added.
The latest fire business came between simmering tension with the North, which carries out weapons testing at an unprecedented pace this year.
In recent weeks, North Korea has been establishing short-range ballistic missiles and artillery rounds off its east and west coasts to protest the South’s service activities.
South Korea’s troops are pulling off their annual Hoguk defense drills in the previous week, designed to run until October 28 and boost their own and mixed ability with the U.S. to counter the North’s nuclear and missile problems.
Pyongyang angrily responded to the drills, which called them provocations and threatening countermeasures. Seoul and Washington say their defensive exercises aim to prevent the North.
