Muriel Elizabeth Bowser (August 2, 1972) is an American politician and a member of the Democratic Party, serving as the eighth mayor of the District of Columbia since 2015. She is the second female Mayor of the District of Columbia after Sharon Pratt and the first woman to be re-elected to that position.

Before becoming Mayor in 2015, Bowser had previously represented served Ward 4 as a Council member of the Council of the District of Columbia. She was first elected in a special election in 2007 and re-elected in 2008 and 2012. As the Council member, she served as the Chairwoman of the Committee on Economic Development, where she helped create more than 5,000 units of affordable housing and passed legislation to build a new soccer stadium. She also led her colleagues to make comprehensive ethics reforms and increased government transparency.

Bowser was sworn in as Mayor of Washington DC on November 6, 2018, and became the first woman to be re-elected as Mayor and the first mayor to earn a second term in 16 years. 

On taking office, Bowser has taken bold steps to diversify the DC economy, reset DC’s competitiveness, speed up affordable housing production, and invest in programs to help more families thrive in DC.

Mayor Bowser has shown her commitment to ensuring every Washingtonian gets a fair shot in a growing and prosperous city like Washington, DC. She focused on advancing DC’s values and prosperity by building safer and healthier neighborhoods across DC’s eight wards.

Being the youngest of the six children, Bowser was born and raised in Washington, where she grew up in North Michigan Park in the northeast. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in History from Chatham University and a Master’s degree in Public Policy from the American University.
