Mia Amor Mottley (October 1, 1965) is a Barbadian politician and attorney who is currently the Prime Minister of Barbados. A leader of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP), she is the first woman and eighth person to hold Barbados’ prime minister position.

Mottley has been a Member of the Inter-American Dialogue and also the Parliament for the constituency of Saint Michael North East since 1994. She held a succession of ministerial portfolios from 1994 to 2008, such as the post of Attorney-General, becoming the first woman to be appointed as such in Barbados.

Mottley attended Merrivale Private School and Queen’s College in Barbados. She graduated from the United Nations International School in New York later obtained a law degree from the London School of Economics, where she finalized her training as an attorney in 1986.

In 1991, Mottley made her entry into politics, where she was one of two Opposition Senators in the Upper House between 1991 and 1994. Being a Member of the Privy Council of Barbados, she was the Leader of the House and a member of the Barbados Defence Board and National Security Council. She was appointed Minister of Home Affairs in August 2001 and became the first female to hold this position and also the youngest Queen’s Counsel in Barbados.

Mottley has been given credit for being a visionary behind “Edutech,” which aims to increase youth contribution for the island’s sustainable, social, and economic development. This program involves the widespread use of information and communication technologies to help improve the quality of the teaching and learning processes.

On May 25, 2018, Mottley was sworn in as Barbados’ first female Prime Minister.  During her tenure, she has also held the additional portfolio of Minister of Finance.

Mottley has been named the “Person of the Year” by the Caribbean National Weekly and is also a recipient of Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (Kenya) in 2019 and Order of Roraima (Guyana) in 2020.
