Designation: Prime Minister
Mette Frederiksen (19 November 1977) is a Danish politician who is the Prime Minister of Denmark since June 2019. A Leader of the Social Democrats since June 2015, she is the second woman to hold office and the youngest prime minister in the country’s history.
Born in Aalborg, North Denmark, Frederiksen holds a bachelor’s degree in Administration and Social Science from Aalborg University and graduated in 2000. She even holds a master’s degree in African Studies from the University of Copenhagen.
At 15, Frederiksen became a member of the Social Democrats’ youth branch and was elected as a member of Folketing, the Danish Parliament, in 2001 at 24. She was named as spokesperson of her party for media, culture, and gender equality. The following year she received the Nina Bang award for exhibiting political enthusiasm and impact with a social feeling.
After the 2011 general election, Frederiksen was appointed Minister of Employment by Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt. In 2014, she was promoted to Minister of Justice. In 2015, she was elected as the Leader of the Opposition, a role she held until becoming Prime Minister.
Frederiksen became Prime Minister on 27 June 2019, heading an exclusively Social Democratic minority government supported by the red bloc. Despite running on an anti-immigration stance during the election, Frederiksen briefly shifted her perspective on immigration by permitting more foreign labor and reversing government plans in order to hold foreign criminals offshore.
Frederiksen is a wonderful mother of two children and is the co-author of Epostler (2003) and From Fight to Culture (2004).
