Maia Sandu (24 May 1972) is a Moldovan politician currently serving as the President of Moldova since 2020. She is the former Prime Minister of Moldova and former leader of the Party of Action and Solidarity.

Sandu was born in Risipeni, situated in the Fălești District of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic. She pursued management at the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova (ASEM) from 1989 to 1994 and majored in international relations at the Academy of Public Administration from 1995 to 1998. She also graduated from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 2010.

Sandu was an Adviser to the Executive Director at the World Bank in Washington, D.C. She also served as Minister of Education of Moldova from 2012 to 2015. In July 2015, she was considered a nominee to be the next Prime Minister of Moldova. In 2016, she was the pro-European candidate in the Moldovan presidential election.

On 8 June 2019, Sandu was elected Prime Minister of Moldova in a coalition government with PSRM. In July 2020, she announced her candidacy for the presidential election and launched her campaign in October 2020.

On winning the elections, she declared under her leadership that Moldova would secure a balance in foreign policy, guide Moldova’s national interests, and have a pragmatic dialogue with all countries, including Romania, European nations, Russia, and Ukraine, and the U.S.

Under her leadership, Sandu announced that the Supreme Security Council would be reorganized. She is a supporter of Moldova’s European integration, the resumption of cooperation with the International Monetary Fund, and the country’s entry into NATO and E.U. When she became President of Romania, she declared that the Republic would integrate into European space with the help of Romania.

In 2014, Sandu received an Order of Work Glory and, in 2020, received an Award of the Group for Social Dialogue.
