London Breed
Mayor of San Francisco, California, US
Age: 46
London Nicole Breed (August 11, 1974) is an American politician currently the 45th mayor of San Francisco. She is the first African-American woman Mayor in the City’s history.
Breed formerly served as supervisor for District 5 and was president of the Board of Supervisors from 2015 to 2018. According to the city charter, she became the acting Mayor of San Francisco following the death of Mayor Ed Lee. She worked in this position from December 2017 to January 2018. On June 5, 2018, she won San Francisco’s mayoral election and was sworn in on July 11, 2018.
Prior to being the District 5 Supervisor, Breed served as Executive Director of the African American Art & Culture Complex in the Western Addition for more than ten years. She even helped transform the struggling center into a financially stable community resource that can provide cultural programs and after-school arts for youth and seniors in the community. She has also served as a Redevelopment Agency Commissioner for five years.
In June 2020, Breed issued policies to address structural inequities to change the nature of policing in San Francisco fundamentally. One of Mayor Breed’s visions was to promote economic justice, including reinvesting the City funding from law enforcement into the African American community.
Since becoming Mayor in July 2018, she has focused on helping the City’s homeless population to care and shelter, including opening nearly 900 new shelter beds in less than three years. Under the Mayor’s Homelessness Recovery Plan, the City will create 6,000 placements for people experiencing homelessness, including permanent housing.
Mayor Breed is a native of San Francisco and was raised by her grandmother in the Western Addition. She graduated from Galileo High School and the University of California, Davis, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science/Public Service. She also went on to earn a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of San Francisco.
