LaToya Cantrell
Mayor of New Orleans, Louisiana, US
Age: 49
LaToya Cantrell (April 3, 1972) is an American politician serving as the 62nd mayor of New Orleans, Louisiana. A member of the Democratic party, Cantrell is the first woman to hold the post since May 7, 2018.
Cantrell was born and raised in Los Angeles. She moved to New Orleans in 1990 and attended the Xavier University of Louisiana, where she earned a BA in sociology. Cantrell settled in Broadmoor, where she joined the board of the Broadmoor Improvement Association and became president of the association in 2004. After Hurricane Katrina and levee failures in 2005, the Broadmoor neighborhood was severely flooded and remained deserted for months.
To help revive the city’s glory, Cantrell worked full-time to implement Broadmoor’s recovery plan from 2006 through 2012.
With her and the residents’ involvement, they formed the Broadmoor School Board, overseeing the reopening and renovation of the Andrew H. Wilson school. Cantrell served as a founding board member of the Broadmoor Development Corporation, a community development corporation that provided various social services for returning residents.
Cantrell declared her mayoral candidacy in March 2017 and won the November 18 runoff election. She was later sworn in as Mayor of New Orleans on May 7, 2018. As Mayor, Cantrell has prioritized improving the lives of the residents of New Orleans. In an attempt to rededicate hotel taxes collected within the city for city use, she has focused on her #fairshare initiative to improve the city’s infrastructure, public transportation, public parks, and green spaces. Intending to create a strategic plan to address families in crisis, she established a new Office of Youth and Families. She also founded a Gun Violence Reduction Council, tasked with finding solutions to violent crime.
Mayor Cantrell currently resides in New Orleans with her husband Jason and daughter RayAnn in New Orleans. In 2016, she was awarded by the presidents of Tulane, Loyola, Xavier universities, and the University of New Orleans for her outstanding service to the community.
