Kristi Noem
Designation: Governor
Country: South Dakota
Age: 49
Kristi Noem (November 30, 1971) is an American politician currently serving as the 33rd governor of South Dakota since January 2019. She is a member of the Republican Party and was U.S. Representative for South Dakota’s at-large congressional district from 2011 to 2019.
Noem was born in Watertown, South Dakota. She went to Hamlin High School, graduated in 1990, and attended Northern State University from 1990 to 1994. At age 20, she married Bryon Noem in 1992 in Watertown, South Dakota.
In 2006, Noem represented the 6th district as a Republican in the South Dakota House of Representatives and was re-elected to a second term in 2008. In 2009 and 2010, Noem sponsored bills to reduce the age of compulsory education in South Dakota to 16, after it was raised to 18 in 2008. She was also on the State Affairs Committee and Taxation Committee.
In November 2016, Noem announced that she would run for governor of South Dakota in 2018 rather than seek reelection to Congress. She was sworn into office as governor of South Dakota on January 5, 2019, and became the first woman in that office in the state.
During her time in Congress, Governor Noem helped pass the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. She respected the rights of her people by trusting them to exercise their responsibility to make the best decisions for themselves and their communities. This approach has been most evident in her response to the COVID-19 pandemic: she never ordered a single business or church to close and never issued a statewide shelter-in-place order.
As part of the Family First Initiative, Noem promised to protect religious liberty and traditional marriage. She has also signed several bills restricting abortion.
