Kersti Kaljulaid

Kersti Kaljulaid was born on December 30, 1969, in Tallinn, Estonia, and is the President of the Republic of Estonia since 2009. She was sworn in on October 10, 2016, for a term of five years, beginning on that date.
Kersti served as a Member of the European Court of Auditors from 2004 to 2016, prior to her election as President of the Republic of Estonia. She worked as the CEO and Chief Financial Officer of the Iru Power Plant, which was owned by the Estonian state-owned energy company Eesti Energia. In addition to this, she previously served as the economic advisor to Prime Minister Mart Laar.
Throughout her professional life, Kersti defines herself as a liberal-conservative. She has spoken in support of a robust civil society with lesser state interference while also helping those in need. She also holds liberal views on social issues such as immigration and LGBT rights.
Kersti has frequently published opinion pieces in the Estonian media on social and economic issues, as well as the country’s position in the European Union, and she is well-known in the country.
Kersti Kaljulaid received her high school diploma from Tallinn Secondary School No. 44 in 1987. She graduated from the University of Tartu cum laude as a biologist in 1992, and in 2001, she obtained her MBA in business management from the University of Tartu. In 2017, Kersti Kaljulaid became the first Estonian to be included in the Forbes list of The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women, where she was ranked 78th. She was also ranked 22nd among the most powerful female political leaders in the world.
