Kay Ivy Ellen
Governor of Alabama, US
Age: 76
Born on October 15, 1944, Kay Ellen Ivey is an American politician currently serving as the 54th governor of Alabama since 2017. She is a member of the Republican Party and served as the 38th Alabama state treasurer from 2003 to 2011. The 30th Lieutenant Governor from 2011 to 2017, Ivey became the second Governor of Alabama and the first female Republican governor after the resignation of her predecessor Robert J. Bentley. At age 76, Kay Ellen Ivy is the oldest governor of the United States.
Kay Ivey grew up in Camden, a small town in Wilcox County, Alabama, and worked on her father’s farm, which taught her to value hard work and live within her means. She graduated from Auburn University in 1967 and soon became a high school teacher and, over the years, a bank officer. She served as a Reading Clerk of the Alabama House of Representatives under Speaker Joseph C. McCorquodale and served as the Assistant Director of the Alabama Development Office, where she worked to promote economic development and employment across the state.
Kay became the first Republican elected state treasurer in 2002 since the 2006 reconstruction. As the treasurer, she was committed to making the office more transparent and efficient. She was elected Lieutenant Governor in 2010, becoming the first Republican woman to hold office in Alabama history. She made history again on November 4, 2014, becoming the first Republican Lieutenant Governor to be re-elected to this position.
Kay has received numerous awards for her service to Alabama, including Newmax’s 50 Most Influential Female Republicans in the country, the 2015 ALFA Service to Agriculture Award, and, most recently, the AIAA 2016 Public Service Award. She was distinguished as a Golden Eagle by the Alabama-Florida Council of the Boy Scouts of America in September 2019 in recognition of her “scout-like service” and for being a pioneering embodiment for women.
Kay was sworn in as the 54th governor of Alabama on April 10, 2017, by Acting Chief Justice Lyn Stuart. She is Alabama’s first lieutenant governor elected to a full term after taking office as governor due to a vacancy in the office. With values carried on and implemented throughout her life, Kay will continue to provide conservative leadership and achieve effective results to make this generation more productive and the next generation more prosperous.
