Katerina Sakellaropoulou (30 May 1956) is a Greek politician who has served as President of Greece since March 2020. Prior to her presidential election as President of Greece, she served as President of the Council of State, the highest administrative court of Greece. She is Greece’s first female President.
Katerina was born in Thessaloniki, Greece. She lived in Thessaloniki for the first eight years of her life and moved to Athens with her family in 1964. She attended Arsakeio School, Psychiko, in 1974 and pursued law at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, completing her studies in 1978.
In 1982, Katerina was appointed Assistant Judge at the Council of State, the Supreme Administrative Court of Greece. She was promoted to the rank of Associate Councillor and served at the 3rd Chamber in 1988, where she primarily worked on cases regarding civil service, education, and local government.
In 2000, Katerina was promoted to Councillor of State, where she served at the 5th Chamber, which deals with environmental law cases. In October 2015, she was promoted to Vice-President and was assigned to the 3rd Chamber. In October 2018, she became the President of the Council of State and remained in the position till February 2020.
On 22 January 2020, Katerina was elected as the first female President of the Hellenic Republic by the Parliament, where she secured 261 votes out of a total of 300. She took the oath before the Parliament in March 2020 and assumed office.
Katerina has authored several articles and essays on constitutional and environmental law matters. She has a daughter along with her partner Pavlos Kotsonis, who joined the Council of State as Assistant Judge in 1981.
