Designation: Interim President
Country: Bolivia
Age: 54
Jeanine Áñez Chávez (13 June 1967) is a Bolivian politician and lawyer who was the 66th President of Bolivia from 2019 to 2020. She was previously a senator from the northeastern department of Beni from 2010 to 2019 and was Bolivia’s second female president.
Áñez was born in San Joaquín, Beni. After joining politics, she joined the Democrat Social Movement and served as a Constituent Assembly member between 2006 and 2008. In 2010, she was elected to the Senate as part of the Plan Progress for Bolivia – National Convergence. Much of Áñez’s work was focused on issues concerning women’s rights, especially violence against women.
Áñez pursued her studies at the Bolivian Institute, following the Abraham Lincoln Institute. After age 23, she enrolled at the José Ballivián Autonomous University of Beni and obtained her graduate degree in Law and legal sciences, where she passed the bar in 1991.
On 10 November 2019, after weeks of protests and marches stemming from allegations of electoral fraud, Morales and his team resigned, as a result of which Áñez had to play the role of interim vice president. Áñez’s government led several investigations into members of the previous administration, charging many with corruption.
On 6 February 2020, Áñez invited the citizens of Bolivia to attend a march in Santa Cruz with an intent to support the fight against violence against women and children. On International Women’s Day in 2020, Áñez announced a US $100 million investment in the fight against violence against women. She declared 2020 as the Year of the Fight Against Feminicide and Infanticide in Bolivia.
On 15 January 2020, Áñez sent a bill to the Plurinational Legislative Assembly to modify the Law for the Abbreviation of Criminal Procedure. According to Áñez and other people, this Law benefits rapists, aggressors, and killers of women due to legal gaps.
