Jean Stothert (February 7, 1954) is an American politician, a former nurse, and a member of the Republican party who is currently serving as the 51st mayor of Omaha, Nebraska.
Jean is in her third term as Mayor of Omaha. Elected in 2013, she is the city’s first woman to be elected to office. She was re-elected in 2017 and 2021 and is currently serving her third term.
As Mayor, Jean’spriorities are focused on public safety, job growth, managing the city budget, economic development, and improving the taxpayer experience. Her ambition is to ensure every citizen receives excellent customer service when they interact with the city government.
Under Jean’s leadership, she has improved city services, twice reduced the property tax, worked with the City Council to grow the city’s tax base and population via annexation, and increased funding for the police department. Her efforts led to an increase in the number of police officers to 900, which became a record-high number in 2020. This achievement is helping to make the city safer by establishing one of the best large-city police departments in America.
Mayor Jean serves on the Metropolitan Area Planning Agency (MAPA) Board of Directors and the Salvation Army Advisory Board. She is also the honorary Chair of the Omaha Sister Cities Association and Co-Chair of the Smart Cities Initiative. She became involved in the Millard Public Schools as a volunteer. She was later elected to the Millard Board of Education and served 11 years, including three years as President. She was elected to the Omaha City Council in 2009, representing District 5 in southwest Omaha.
Jean grew up in Wood River, Illinois. She earned her degree in Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Seattle Pacific University. She worked as a nurse and later as the department head of cardiovascular surgery at St. Louis University. In 1993, Mayor Stothert and her family moved to Omaha. She has two children and four grandsons.
