Janet Trafton Mills (December 30, 1947) is an American politician, lawyer,  serving as the 75th governor of Maine since January 2019. Mills is the first woman governor in Maine’s history who earned more votes than any governor in the state. She is also the first governor since 1966 to win a majority of votes for her first term.

Mills hails from Farmington, Maine. Before moving to San Francisco, she briefly attended Colby College. She later graduated with a bachelor of arts degree at the University of Massachusetts at Boston in 1970 and attended the University of Maine School of Law, where she graduated in 1974.

Mills hails from Farmington, Maine. Before moving to San Francisco, she briefly attended Colby College. She later graduated with a bachelor of arts degree at the University of Massachusetts at Boston in 1970 and attended the University of Maine School of Law, where she graduated in 1974.

From 1976 to 1980, Mills was Maine’sMaine’s first female prosecutor and served as Assistant Attorney General, where she prosecuted homicides and major crimes. She was elected District Attorney for Androscoggin, Franklin, and Oxford Counties, making her the first woman elected as a DA in New England.

In 1998, Mills was the co-founder of Maine’sMaine’s Women’sWomen’s Lobby and was soon elected to the board of directors. In 2002, she was elected to the Maine House of Representatives as a Democrat, where she served on the judiciary and appropriations committees. When the Joint Convention was held in December 2008, Mills was elected to her fourth term to elect the new Attorney General. She was eventually elected and became the 55th Attorney General of Maine on January 6, 2009.

In July 2017, Mills announced to seek Democratic nomination for governor of Maine in 2018. She won the elections and was sworn in as Maine’sMaine’s Governor on January 2, 2019. As governor, one of Mill’sMill’s first acts was to sign an executive order to carry out the expansion of Maine’sMaine’s Medicaid program.

Governor is a supporter of LGBT rights. She signed a bill banning conversion therapy on minors in May 2019 and officially declared June as LGBTQ+ Pride Month in June 2021.

Mills was married to real estate developer Stanley Kuklinski in 1985, with whom she had five stepdaughters.
