Jane Castor
Mayor of Tampa, Florida, US
Age: 60
Jane Castor (December 7, 1960) is an American politician serving as the 59th mayor of Tampa, Florida. A former member of the Republican Party, she was the first and openly gay woman to become the Chief of Police of the Tampa Police Department from 2009 to 2015.
During her time as Chief, Castor worked to reduce major crimes in the city by 70%. She successfully developed and executed a progressive policing strategy during the 2012 Republican National Convention and oversaw the Bollywood Awards held in America for the first time. She managed the multi-jurisdictional security plan for Super Bowl XLIII and led the Department of Homeland Security’s Tampa Bay Urban Area Security Initiative.
The main highlight in Castor’s career was reaching out to the community. During her time as an officer working night shifts, she became familiar with business owners, families, and community leaders in her neighborhood to better understand their safety needs.
The golden rule under her watch was to treat everyone in and around the city with dignity and respect. As Chief, Castor expected every officer to be immersed in the community as a partner.
Committed to the youth, Jane raised funds to build a $4 million gymnasium and recreation center for at-risk children. The Police Athletic League now offers after-school and summer programs for more than 500 disadvantaged youth. The Tampa Police department also built an additional RICH House in the city. It was created to provide a safe haven for children in economically challenged neighborhoods and has provided after-school guidance and support to hundreds of needy children.
While Castor’s mayoral candidacy was speculated in 2016, she officially made her announcement in April 2018. On April 23, 2019, she won the majority votes during the runoff election.
Castor is recognized for her leadership and ambitions for her community and career. Her work has been recognized by numerous awards, including the 2015 University of South Florida President’s Distinguished Citizen Award, 2014 Tampa Chamber of Commerce’s Woman of Influence, 2013 Crisis Center of Tampa Bay’s Community Advocate Award, and 2011 Tampa Connection’s Betty Tribble Citizen of the Year Award.
Castor attended Chamberlain High School in Tampa and graduated in 1977. She attended the University of Tampa, where she played volleyball and basketball while earning a degree in criminology.
