Inonge Wina (2 April 1941) is a Zambian politician who served as the 13th vice-president of Zambia from 2015 to 2021. She is the first woman to hold this position, making her the highest-ranking woman in Zambian government history.
Wina went to primary school in Senanga, at the Barotse National School in Mongu. She attended Santa Monica High School in Los Angeles, California, and obtained a diploma in social work at Santa Monica College. She also pursued her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Zambia.
Wina was involved in community work since the 1970s when she volunteered free service to women’s movements. She served on several boards of non-governmental organizations and was instrumental in promoting women’s human rights agenda, resulting in the Zambian government’s establishment of the Victim Support Unit.
In 1996, Wina was elected National Chairperson of the NGO Coordinating Council of Zambia (NGOCC). She also led the women’s movement in the Red Ribbon Campaign in defence of the Zambian Constitution in the 2000s.
In 2001, Wina was elected as a Member of Parliament of Nalolo Constituency as a candidate of the United Party for National Development. She became chairperson of several portfolio committees, including the Committee on Human Rights Gender and Governance and the Women Parliamentary Caucus.
In January 2015, Wina was appointed as Vice President of Zambia, becoming the first woman elected as Vice President, and resigned in 2021. Wina was married to Arthur Wina, an independence fighter, academic, and former minister who died in 1995.
