Age: 50

Gretchen Esther Whitmer (August 23, 1971) is an American attorney, educator, and politician serving as the 49th governor of Michigan since 2019.

Whitmer hails from Lansing, Michigan. She graduated from Forest Hills Central High School and earned a BA degree in communications from Michigan State University in 1993. She also earned her Juris Doctor from Detroit College of Law at Michigan State University in 1998.

Initially, Whitmer ran for the Michigan House of Representatives in the 1990s but was unsuccessful. She tried again and was soon elected to represent the 23rd legislative district in 2000 and reelected in 2002 and 2004. In March 2006, she won a special election to the Michigan State Senate.

On June 21, 2016, Whitmer was administered the oath of office as a prosecutor by Ingham County Circuit Court Chief Judge Janelle Lawless. On July 22, 2016, Whitmer issued an 11-page report on whether Dunning’s alleged criminal activity had affected cases handled by the office.

Whitmer describes herself as a progressive Democrat. As a gubernatorial candidate and governor, one of her key pledges was to “fix the damn roads,” referencing Michigan’s struggling infrastructure. With Whitmer’s initial plan being funding road repairs, her first budget earmarked several billions of dollars for investment in infrastructure. She proposed increasing the gasoline tax by 45 cents per gallon to fund road repairs.

Whitmer is the mother of two children with her first husband, Gary Shrewsbury. She then married dentist Marc P. Mallory, who has three children from his previous marriage.
