Gina Marie Raimondo (May 17, 1971) is an American politician currently serving as the 40th United States Secretary of Commerce since 2021. A venture capitalist and member of the Democratic Party, Raimondo previously served as the 75th and first female Governor of Rhode Island from 2015 to 2021.
Raimondo was born in Smithfield, Rhode Island. She graduated with a BA degree in economics from Harvard College in 1993 and attended New College, where she received her MA degree and Doctor of Philosophy in 2002 in sociology. She later received her Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School in 1998.
Raimondo was formerly the 75th Governor of Rhode Island and was its first woman governor. As governor, she kick-started the state’s economy and made record investments in job training, infrastructure, and education. She focused on creating economic opportunities and good-paying jobs and launched an innovative workforce development program that develops business-led partnerships to address unique workforce challenges.
On January 7, 2021, President Joe Biden announced he would nominate Raimondo to serve as his Secretary of Commerce. Vice President Kamala Harris duly swore her in on March 3, 2021. As Secretary of Commerce, her focus is to spur good-paying jobs, empower entrepreneurs, and help American workers and businesses compete and flourish.
Raimondo is a Council on Foreign Relations member and an Aspen Institute Rodel Fellow. She received an honorary degree from Bryant University in 2012 and several awards from the northern Rhode Island chamber of commerce. She was also elected an alumni fellow at Yale in 2014.
