FDA has approved emergency usage of the Novavax Covid-19 vaccine for 12 to 17 years of age
August 23, 2022: -On Friday, Biotechnology company Novavax reported that its Covid-19 vaccine had been approved for emergency use by the FDA for adolescents between the 12 and 17 years of age.
The previous month, Novavax’s two-dose Covid-19 vaccine for adults ages 18 got its emergency approval from the FDA.
Further vaccine options for adults and children will “hopefully help increase vaccination rates, especially as we prepare for ongoing growths of Covid-19 with the start of decrease and the back-to-school season,” Stanley C. Erck, president, and CEO of Novavax, says.
Novavax was the original party in the U.S. government’s race to develop a Covid vaccine in 2020, which receives $1.8 billion in taxpayer funds from Operation Warp Speed. Although, the small Maryland biotech company worked to get manufacturing in place quickly, and its clinical trial data read out after the rivals Pfizer or Moderna.
Dr. Peter Marks, a senior FDA official, has stated that Novavax’s vaccine would appeal to people who are not vaccinated and would prefer a dose that is not founded on the messenger RNA technology used by Pfizer and Moderna.
The Novavax doses are based on more conventional protein technology used for decades in hepatitis B and HPV vaccines. At the same time, Pfizer and Moderna are the first FDA-approved vaccines to use mRNA.
Pfizer and Moderna’s vaccines use mRNA, a molecule encoded with genetic instructions, to tell human cells to give copies of a virus particle known as the spike protein. The immune system responds to these copies of the spike, preparing the human body to attack the actual virus.
Novavax creates copies of the virus spike outside human cells. The genetic code for the point is put into an insect virus that infects moth cells, producing documents that are then purified and extracted during manufacturing. The finished spike copies are given to the human body, which includes an immune response against Covid.
The Novavax vaccine uses an additional ingredient called an adjuvant, extracted and refined from the bark of a tree in South America to induce a broader immune response. The doses consist of 5 micrograms of the spike copy and 50 micrograms of the adjuvant.
