Chinas Xi is to visit Riyadh as Saudi Arabia desires to grow its transnational reach

December 13, 2022: On Wednesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping will remain in Saudi Arabia to attend the initial China-Arab areas Summit and the China-Gulf Cooperation Council Summit in Riyadh, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in China stated.

The visit will span three days, followed by an invitation from Saudi Arabia’s King Salman and attendance by different Arab heads of state.

“Close relations between the two countries were started 80 years ago, encompassing various areas of cooperation and development,” the official Saudi Press Agency stated.

Saudi Arabia was the largest oil importer of China in the previous year, accounting for 17% of the Asian firm’s oil imports.

“The optics of a hospitable kingdom to welcome Xi and inviting a host of U.S. partners in the Middle East will prove vital,” Eurasia Group’s analysts noted.

“Saudi Arabia is adopting a similar model to U.S. President Joe Biden’s visit last July, which presents itself as the regional hub for weighing geopolitical meetings,” they added.

A disagreement more than oil production came to a head when the Saudi, which led OPEC, made up two million barrels per day despite U.S. calls to pump more. Biden then stated to the reporters at the White House he thought the amount was “unnecessary.”

“Riyadh experiences a geopolitical order that is huge in flux, with an opportunity to improve its leverage in the international system,” Eurasia said.

Saudi’s leadership is being assessed that its interests are serving through broadening the kingdom’s international partners, they added, stating that it includes connections with “the UK, France, Germany, Greece, and Spain on the European area, Russia on the energy front, and many Asian areas on the economic front.”
