Betsy Price
Mayor of Fort Worth, Texas, US
Age: 71
Barbara Elizabeth Cornelius Price aka Betsy Price (October 21, 1949) is an American businesswoman and politician who served as the Mayor of Fort Worth, Texas, from 2011 to 2021.
Price is a Republican who made her first bid for public office in 2000 for Tarrant County’s Tax Assessor position and got elected. Although she decided not to seek re-election as Mayor after five terms, Price announced in June 2021 that she would be a candidate for County Judge of Tarrant County in the forthcoming election cycle. Previously, she had served 2½ terms as the elected Tarrant County tax assessor-collector from 2001 to 2011.
Being an Arlington Heights resident, Price did her schooling in South Hi Mount Elementary School and Stripling Junior High School. She graduated from Arlington Heights High School in 1968, where she had been President of her homeroom and President of the Future Homemakers of America. She is the youngest of the four children of parents Wayne Clarence Cornelius and Elizabeth Mary Dalton.
Price never thought about running for Mayor but later contemplated the position after several politicians, including Fort Worth’s first female Mayor Kay Granger, approached her to consider the position. After winning a run-off election against Jim Lane in the partisan contest, she ran the office from 2011 to June 15, 2021.
Price has extended her support in an effort to make change the city charter. Several measures included increasing the number of council seats from 8 to 10, raising the council’s pay, extending the term of office from 2 years to 3 years, and determining how to fill a vacant council seat.
In the late 1980s, Price ran her own car title and licensing company from her father’s car business for 17 years. She is married to Tom Price for more than 40 years, and they have three children and several grandchildren.
